Newcastle Home Owner Tries For 2 Hours To Change Broken Lock… & Fails

Anthony |21st July, 2023

This project featured the “simple lock” everyone is talking about, whether asking for a lock replacement in Newcastle or Gateshead, or in most locksmith forums and groups.

In theory, yes, changing a lock should be relatively straightforward, as long as you know what to do, and have the tools to do it. In our case, this homeowner and her family spent more than two hours trying to change the lock, but couldn’t get anywhere. It was getting late and securing the door became quite urgent, hence the call for an emergency locksmith in Newcastle.

Upon my initial assessment, I was quite taken aback by the situation: nothing seemed broken, yet the lock was stuck solid, the key partially turned and impossible to remove –  somehow aligned with the mechanism it fitted in.

To remedy this, I did what I usually do when I’m not sure about a situation: take things apart as much as possible.

At this point, a competent locksmith will be able to identify the problem. I had figured this out by looking into the hole where the retaining screw goes. Even though the lock seemed perfectly aligned, it turned out it was not. But then why would it not move when it was in place? Well, there was a small obstruction that made the lock unable to fit and once removed, as if by magic, the lock slid in place perfectly.

No need to snap or drill anything, just a bit of analysis and taking time to do things rather than rush, break stuff, and replace because “it’s faster this way”.

Any professional Newcastle locksmith will try their best not to break or damage anything unless necessary and that was the case today, ending with a very happy customer!
